Give Back This Holiday Season: Support Local Food Banks in Spokane

The holiday season is a time for connection, generosity, and community—and one of the most impactful ways to make a difference is by supporting your local food bank. Here in Spokane, organizations like Second Harvest play a critical role in ensuring families across our region have access to fresh, healthy food during the months when need is highest.

At North Town Insurance, giving back to our community is part of who we are. This November, we’re excited to announce a special initiative to help maximize your generosity.

How to participate:
Just share a screenshot or photo of your donation.

  • Add it in the comments on our social post, or
  • Send it to us via DM.

We’ll tally every submission and make a matching donation at the end of the month.

Together, we can make a measurable difference for families in our community.

Why Food Banks Need Support During the Holidays

Food insecurity affects thousands of families in Spokane County. During the holiday season, demand increases as many households face added financial stress, school breaks, and higher utility costs.

Food banks rely on community donations to keep their shelves stocked with:

  • Canned goods
  • Pantry staples
  • Fresh produce
  • Holiday meal essentials
  • Frozen meats and proteins

Even small donations add up—and food banks can stretch dollars further than most of us can at the grocery store.

Spotlight: Second Harvest Food Bank

Second Harvest is one of the region’s most impactful hunger-relief organizations. Serving as a distribution hub for more than 250 neighborhood food pantries and meal programs, they help provide millions of pounds of food each year to families across the Inland Northwest.

They offer:

  • Emergency food assistance
  • Mobile markets
  • Bite2Go weekend food kits for kids
  • Nutrition education programs
  • Volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups

If you’re looking for a way to give back locally, Second Harvest is one of the most effective places to start.

Ways to Donate This Holiday Season

You can make an impact in just a few minutes. Here are simple, accessible ways to support food banks throughout Spokane and beyond:

Donate Non-Perishable Food

Drop off items such as:

  • Canned vegetables, soups, and beans
  • Pasta, rice, and grains
  • Peanut butter and shelf-stable proteins
  • Baby formula and diapers
  • Holiday meal items (stuffing, gravy, cranberries)

Make a Monetary Donation

Food banks can stretch every dollar more efficiently through bulk purchasing. Even small contributions make a real difference.

Use Grocery Store Donation Bins

Most major Spokane grocery stores—including Rosauers, Yoke’s, Safeway, and Walmart—have donation barrels available through December.

Host a Mini Food Drive

Your workplace, neighborhood, book club, or team can collect items quickly with minimal planning.

Volunteer Your Time

Food banks rely heavily on volunteers to sort, package, and distribute food. Even an hour or two out of your day can make a meaningful difference in preparing items for distribution and helping ensure families receive the support they need.
